Tomorrow (May 19), as part of the Heritage Month observations, the Bermuda Post Office (BPO) will issue a commemorative stamp series highlighting the St. George’s Historical Society.
The series highlights the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the organization, which was solidified with the passage of the St. George’s Historical Society Act on May 13, 1922.
The St. George’s Historical Society’s Museum, located inside Mitchell House, was converted from a house into a museum when the Society assumed ownership in 1922. The facility remains much as it was nearly 300 years ago. With its period furnishings, recreated colonial-era kitchen and historical documents and artefacts about Bermuda’s history, including a Gutenberg-style printing press - the facility transports the visitor back to the centuries of early life in Bermuda.
The house is an instantly recognisable landmark in the heart of St. George’s, and it has remained the home of the Society ever since its formation.
The commemorative stamps can be purchased from the General Post Office in Hamilton, as well as various sub post offices around the island. To learn more about the Heritage Month activities, including the upcoming Bermuda Day Parade, please email culture@gov.bm or call the main office at 292-1681.
