Today the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport extended his congratulations to Bermuda’s Davis Cup men’s tennis team who successfully defeated the country of Georgia 3-2 in World Group II Davis Cup Tennis yesterday (Feb. 7).
Minister Darrell said, “On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I am extremely proud to congratulate our men’s Davis Cup Tennis Team on a truly historic achievement.
“This weekend, Bermuda excelled on the world stage by defeating Georgia in World Group II of the Davis Cup, which is considered the World Cup of Tennis. Let me be very clear, this is no small accomplishment. Our players competed against athletes who are ranked significantly higher internationally, and yet they rose to the occasion with grit, discipline, and belief in themselves and in Bermuda."
Minister Darrell added, “For these young men to compete and win at this level sends a powerful message about Bermudian talent, perseverance, and excellence in sport. We understand that success at this level requires preparation, sacrifice, and resources. The Government was pleased to extend its support to the team to assist in their world class performance.
“I want to commend the players, the coaches, the support staff, and the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association for their leadership and commitment to developing tennis in this country. Congratulations once again to our Davis Cup team. We are proud of you, and we look forward to supporting you in the next round.”
