Today, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon. Jache Adams, JP, MP, toured the Botanical Gardens as final preparations continue for the 84th Annual Agricultural Exhibition, which officially opens this Thursday, April 24.
Minister Adams was joined by officials from the Department of Parks, who guided him through various sections of the grounds that will welcome thousands of visitors over the three-day event. The Minister expressed his appreciation for the work of staff, volunteers, and exhibitors.
“The effort, creativity, and care that have gone into preparing for this year's Exhibition are truly commendable,” said Minister Adams.
“From the vibrant plant displays to the student artwork and traditional Bermudian crafts, this is a celebration of who we are."
During his tour, the Minister visited the Jack King Building, where he viewed chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and other animals entered into this year's show.
He was also shown traditional Bermudian kites, woodwork, and various arts and crafts on display inside the Visitor’s Centre.
Additionally, the Minister viewed a range of plants and flowers inside the Commercial Slat House and the JJ Outerbridge building, and he stopped by the Horticultural Hall to admire the baked goods submitted for entry.
While highlighting the event's many draws, the Minister acknowledged one notable absence that many families and children will recognise.
“I do want to express my own disappointment, and I know it will be shared by many, that there will be no pigs on display this year,” Minister Adams said.
“Pigs have been a cherished part of this Exhibition for generations, and our team made every effort to import them for the show.
“Unfortunately, logistical issues beyond our control prevented that from happening. We will continue to explore solutions so that this beloved feature returns in the future.”
Despite the absence of pigs, Minister Adams was enthusiastic about this year’s event's exciting new features—most notably, the introduction of high-octane BMX stunt shows.
Starting at 12 p.m. on Thursday inside the Show Ring, attendees will be treated to daily performances by Andrei Burton, one of the UK’s top bike trials riders and an eight-time Guinness World Record holder.
Known for his fearless stunts and positive message, Burton’s shows are expected to be a significant highlight of the Exhibition.
“Andrei Burton is a phenomenal talent,” said Minister Adams. “His energy, skills, and message about resilience and healthy living will be a huge hit with our young people and families.
“I encourage everyone to check the daily programmes and watch his incredible shows.” Visitors can view the full schedule of performances in the Show Ring and Lower Ring by visiting www.gov.bm/exhibition.
The 84th Agricultural Exhibition runs from Thursday, April 24 to Saturday, April 26. Gates open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“This Exhibition is a tribute to our heritage, community, and future,” said Minister Adams. “I look forward to seeing Bermudians and visitors reuniting again this week to celebrate it.”
