The Ministry of Health will observe HIV Testing Day on June 27, an important opportunity to renew conversations about HIV, break down stigma, promote regular testing, and highlight the services and support available throughout Bermuda.
As part of its commitment to community well-being, the Department of Health will host an HIV Testing Day and Health Fair on Friday, 27 June, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Centennial Hall, St. Paul’s AME Church on Victoria Street. In addition to free HIV testing, the health fair will offer complimentary screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index (BMI), nutrition, mental health, and dental health.
Minister of Health, the Hon. Kim Wilson, JP, MP, emphasized the importance of testing, stating: “Getting tested for HIV is a powerful step in taking control of your health. Early detection saves lives, protects loved ones, and helps end the stigma. You can’t take charge of your health if you don’t know your status, and getting tested is the first step.”
In 2024, Bermuda reported eight new HIV cases, a notable increase compared to zero in 2023 and two in 2022. All individuals were adults aged 30 to 60, with seven identifying as male and one as female. Notably, 75% of cases were among men who have sex with men (MSM). These statistics reflect an urgent need for increased testing, public education, and enhanced access to care.
Minister Wilson added: “It’s important to understand that HIV is not always accompanied by visible symptoms. While some may experience brief, flu-like symptoms early on, the virus can enter a silent phase lasting years without treatment. A person may feel healthy and yet still be able to transmit the virus. That’s why knowing your status is vital.”
The Ministry continues to advocate for education and prevention. Free and confidential Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screenings, including HIV testing, are available at the Sexual and Reproductive Health Services located at the Hamilton Health Centre, Victoria Street. Services also include contact tracing, sexual health education, and ongoing support throughout the year.
To schedule a test, contact your GP or call Sexual and Reproductive Health Services at 246-7711 or 444-1711.
