How do I get a separate assessment number for my apartment?
- Once you receive your Certificate of Use and Occupancy from the Planning Department for the apartment, contact the Land Valuation Department directly. Additionally, if the apartment was created without Planning permission, you should still contact the Planning Department.
What would some of the reasons be why I couldn't get another assessment number for my property?
- In addition to receiving your Certificate of Use and Occupancy, an additional assessment number from the Land Valuation Department can be obtained providing the new proposed valuation unit is "capable of beneficial occupation" as a separate valuation unit. What this means is:
- The new unit has to be completely separate from all other units (i.e. no interconnecting doors to any other valuation unit). A locked doorway will not meet this requirement. There has to be permanent physical separation between the units.
- The new unit must have the proper appropriate facilities for habitation. For example, for residential properties, you are required to have a kitchen, bathroom and a sleeping area. A hot plate and a toaster does not constitute a kitchen and therefore would not meet the test.
