How to put out household garbage:
To reduce the incidence of feral animals, and disease vectors such as rats and mosquitoes, put household waste in sealed plastic bags inside lidded bins. Place out for collection on your scheduled day only.
TIP! To help prevent rodents, freeze food waste and place out with other garbage on day of collection only!
What can I put in my garbage?
Household waste goes into closed plastic bags, preferably in lidded bins, for curbside collection.
Household waste items include paper, cardboard, plastics and food waste. These items are collected and brought to the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy facility, where they are converted to electricity to help power Bermuda.
You cannot place the following items into your garbage or recycling:
- animal waste – cat and dog faeces must be either flushed down the toilet or dried, wrapped in paper, placed in plastic bags andthen dropped in the bin at Tynes Bay. Farm-animal waste may be taken to the Marsh Folly Composting Facility;
- compact fluorescent lightbulbs or fluorescent tube lights – must be dropped off at Tynes Bay;
- consumer electronics (cell phones, computers, etc.) – can be recycled at cell phone providers island-wide;
- household batteries – can be disposed of at grocers, pharmacies, hardware stores, service centres around Bermuda, and at the Tynes Bay Public Drop Off;
- items containing mercury, such as thermometers, thermostats and switches can be disposed of at the Tynes Bay Public Drop-Off;
- vehicle batteries and motor oil – can be disposed of at service centres around Bermuda and at the Tynes Bay public drop off.
If you are unsure about correct disposal, refer to the
for assistance.
What can I recycle?
Bermuda’s TAG blue or clear bag recycling system accepts tin cans (steel), aluminium cans and glass bottles which are collected curb-side every other week.
Tin and aluminium are shipped to the USA where they are melted down into sheet metal and used to make new packaging or consumer goods.
Glass is reused on-island as a drainage medium on golf-courses, landscaping projects, and large construction projects.
Household batteries may be deposited in specially marked tubes at grocers, pharmacies, hardware stores and service stations island-wide. These are shipped off island for either recycling or disposal depending on type.
Vehicle batteries and motor oil can be disposed of at service centres around Bermuda and at the Tyns Bay Public Drop-Off. These are shipped off-island for either recycling or disposal depending on type. eWaste is shipped off island for de-manufacture, sorting and conversion into new consumer goods. Call 501-3043 for drop-off location information.

Fats, oils, and grease
Don’t pour cooking fats, oils, and grease into drains. The grease congeals and can cause issues in Bermuda’s sewer and wastewater systems.
Instead, let grease cool in the pan and then wipe when cool with a dry paper towel. Dispose of the paper towel with your regular garbage. Alternatively, pour hot grease into a container and then transfer the cooled grease to your regular garbage.
Where does my garbage and recycling go?
Household garbage placed out for collection is taken to the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy Facility where it is incinerated to make energy for Bermuda.
Recyclables, in either blue or clear bags, are taken to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where items are mechanically sorted by type. Metals are shipped to the USA to be converted into new consumer items. Glass is reused here in Bermuda.
Special Waste items such as paints, pesticides and other potentially harmful substances, once dropped off at the Tynes Bay Public Drop-Off, are taken to the Sally Port Special Waste Facility for sorting. From there they are shipped to the USA for processing or disposal in USEPA environmentally regulated landfill facilities.
Illegal dumping and mishandled waste
Illegal dumping is a serious crime with human health implications. Illegally dumped material can encourage mosquitoes and vermin which are disease vectors. Clean-up costs can result in thousands of tax dollars and man-power hours per year which could be put to better use. Under the Waste and Litter Control Act (2011) illegal dumping is punishable by fines of up to $10,000.
Mishandled waste, or putting waste out for collection on the wrong days, in inappropriate containers such as paper bags, or after trucks have already serviced an area results in waste and litter pollution which also has human health implications. The Waste Education and Enforcement Officer works with neighbourhoods to educate and help.
Report incidents of illegal dumping and mishandled waste to the Waste Education and Enforcement Officer on (441) 278-0563 or email recycle@gov.bm.
