STEPS to a Well Bermuda Survey
Over the next few months, Bermuda residents have the opportunity to participate in the STEPS to a Well Bermuda Survey. In collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization, the Ministry of Health will be conducting the STEPS population health survey among a representative sample of Bermuda's adult population, aged 18 years and older.
The STEPS survey allows the Ministry of Health to update vital health information that was last collected in 2014. This data is crucial for setting public health priorities and managing chronic non-communicable diseases.
Participation involves three simple steps, all conveniently done at home, providing a free health screening for those selected. The steps are as follows:
STEP 1: Health Questionnaire: Interviewers will gather information through a standardized questionnaire about health-related behaviors, including diet and physical activity.
STEP 2: Physical Measurements: Your blood pressure, weight, height, and waist circumference will be measured.
STEP 3: Biochemical Assessment: At a convenient time, a community health professional will take a finger stick blood sample to measure fasting blood glucose and cholesterol levels.
Upon completing steps 2 and 3, participants will receive their results, which they can use personally or share with their healthcare provider. All information is kept confidential and anonymized.
"STEPS surveys provide essential data that helps us understand and tackle critical public health issues, especially in preventing and managing chronic illnesses like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers," explained Minister of Health, Kim Wilson. "These surveys also track trends and factors that influence our overall health, enabling us to make informed decisions for a healthier Bermuda. By participating, you're taking steps towards your own health and contributing to a healthier future for all of Bermuda."
Minister Wilson, JP, MP, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: "I encourage all selected residents to participate. Your involvement is vital for the success of the 2024 STEPS to a Well Bermuda survey. Together, we can work towards a Well Bermuda for everyone."
