Lower Fuel Tax and Energy Saving Tips to Combat Rising Costs
The Government of Bermuda is committed to ensuring that it introduces solutions to assist hard working residents.
That’s why it has taken decisive action to alleviate the financial pressures related to increasing energy costs.
A Government spokesperson said, “Our recent decision to cut the tax on fuel by 60% underscores our commitment to doing all we can to reduce the burden of inflation. This action follows the steps taken two years ago to freeze fuel prices when they hit record highs globally, providing relief for Bermudian families, taxi drivers and minibus operators at the pump.
“We recognise that multiple factors, including fluctuating international energy markets, contribute to increased utility bills. While these factors are beyond our control, there are practical, cost-effective steps residents can take to better manage their electricity bills. Small changes can lead to significant savings.”
With that in mind, residents are reminded and encouraged to implement the following energy-saving measures:
Switch to Energy-Efficient Lighting: Replace all home lighting with energy-efficient LEDs. The Department of Energy’s LED giveaway initiative remains available at post offices across the Island. A single 60-watt equivalent LED used for five hours daily at our current kilowatt-hour prices saves $37 per year. With an LED’s expected life span of four to six years, consumers could save a minimum of $148 for each LED over a four-year lifespan. Four LEDs increase household savings to around $592 over a four-year lifespan.
Be Mindful of Lighting Usage: Turn off lights in rooms that are not in use to conserve energy.
Optimise Air Conditioning Settings: Set your air conditioning unit to the most efficient settings. Consider using the dehumidifier mode to reduce humidity and improve comfort, which may allow less frequent use of the cooling setting.
Install a Timer on Your Water Heater: Use a timer to reduce your water heater's operating hours. To save energy, keep it off at night or when the house is unoccupied.
Unplug Idle Appliances: Unplug appliances and mobile chargers when not in use, as they can still draw power even when turned off.
Invest in Energy-Efficient Appliances: When purchasing new appliances, consider models with higher energy efficiency ratings. Taking the time to explore energy-saving options can make a lasting impact on reducing your household electricity usage.
Monitor Utility Bills: Always investigate any dramatic fluctuations in your utility billing to ensure accuracy.
The Government of Bermuda is committed to helping every resident combat the rising energy expenses. By taking these steps, you can manage your electricity costs more effectively and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Bermuda.
