Government Clarifies Guidelines for Permission to Reside and Seek Employment

The Ministry of Economy and Labour reminds the public of the specific circumstances under which individuals may apply for Permission to Reside and Seek Employment in Bermuda. This clarification ensures transparency, consistency, and proper application of Bermuda’s immigration framework.

These applications are not stand-alone but only considered in the following context:

  1. Continuation of Residency Rights

  2. Where an individual's residency rights have expired, such as following the end of a work permit or previously approved residency, Permission to Reside and Seek Employment may be granted for a maximum of 90 days.

  3. This provision allows the individual a limited period to legally remain in Bermuda while seeking new employment or preparing to depart the island.

The Ministry also notes important distinctions between other applications:

  1. Permission to Reside on an Annual Basis: Provides longer-term residency under specific eligibility criteria. Holders of this permission are not permitted to work in Bermuda.

  2. Partners of Residents: Partners may apply for permission to seek employment, with the duration of that permission tied directly to the residency approval granted to the resident partner.

Also, as a reminder, permission to reside and seekemployment is granted only as an extension of prior residency rights and is not available as a separate application.

Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward explained, “It's important for the public to understand that Permission to Reside and Seek Employment is not a stand-alone application, but one that applies only under specific circumstances. This clarification ensures greater transparency and consistency in how Bermuda’s immigration framework is applied."

The Ministry remains committed to striking a balance between the protection of Bermudian workers and the fair and orderly administration of immigration processes.
