DCFS Honours Foster Parents at Annual Tea
The Department of Child & Family Services (DCFS) hosted its Annual Appreciation Tea for Foster Parents on Sunday, May 3, at the Hamilton Princess, recognizing the dedication and commitment of Bermuda’s foster families and support network.
May is observed as Foster Care Month, a time to recognize foster parents, caregivers, social workers and advocates who support children and young people in need of safe, stable and nurturing homes.
Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, praised foster parents for the invaluable role they play in the lives of Bermuda’s children and young people, stating, “Foster parents continue to provide love, stability and guidance to children who need it most. Their commitment strengthens our communities, and we encourage more people to step forward and become part of this vital support system. Raising children truly takes a village.”
The event featured an inspiring keynote address by Kahnae Bean titled “From Sunshine League to Cabinet,” in which she shared her personal journey through foster care, highlighting the importance of supportive foster parents, social workers and community advocates.
During the ceremony, DCFS presented three special awards recognizing outstanding contributions to foster care. Kimberly Jackson received the Therapeutic Foster Parent Award, Cherie Edwards received the Advocacy Award, and Verleda Simons received the Kinship Care Award for her steadfast dedication to raising her granddaughter.
