Social insurance benefits
There are pension benefits, disability benefits, and widow/widower benefits available in Bermuda.
Collecting pension benefits
You are entitled to receive your contributory pension if you:
- are 65 years of age or over; and
- have paid (or been credited with) between 25 and 50 contributions to the Contributory Pension Fund (CPF) a year.
The amount you receive will depend on the total contributions and number of years you have been part of the plan. You may qualify whether you stop working or not.

Disability benefits
Contributory
You may be eligible for a disability benefit if:
- you are over the age of 18 and under 65;
- you cannot work due to a physical or mental disability;
- the incapacity lasts for a continuous period of more than 52 weeks;
- you were gainfully employed immediately before the date of incapacity for work;
- you have made at least 150 contributions to social insurance;
- your yearly average number of contributions paid or credited is over 25; and
- you can produce a certificate of inability to work signed by a local registered medical doctor.
The rate of benefit will depend on your contribution record.
Non-Contributory
If you have not paid into the social insurance scheme, you may still qualify for disability benefit if you:
- are a resident in Bermuda aged over 18 but under 65 years of age;
- cannot work due to permanent physical or mental disability;
- have been a resident in Bermuda for a continuous period of at least ten years immediately preceding the date you apply; and
- produce a medical certificate of inability to work.

Benefits for widows and widowers
In the unfortunate event of the death of a spouse, the widow or widower may have access to the benefits of their partner.
To qualify:
- you must have been married for at least three years; and
- the deceased must have satisfied the two conditions required for a
File.
The widow or widower benefit is paid for the first 26 weeks after the death of the spouse, but this may continue if:
- you are incapable of self-support;
- or you have dependent child(ren) under school-leaving age; or
- you are over the age of 50.
If your late spouse paid into the scheme but failed to meet the contribution conditions, you may be eligible for a refund of the total value of contributions paid on behalf of the deceased.
Survivors Benefit
A person shall be entitled to a Survivors Benefit if he/she-
- A widow/widower, shall be entitled to an allowance, if the deceased at the date of death satisfies the relevant contribution conditions.
- A widow/widower, shall be entitled to a widow’s gratuity if the deceased at the date of death failed to satisfy the relevant contribution conditions.
- The child/children shall be entitled to an Other Gratuity in the absence of a widow/widower.
- The estate representative shall be entitled to a benefit in the absence of a widow/widower or children.
